Deep Freeze: Winter Plumbing Techniques

Winter is right around the corner, and now is the time to protect your pipes from damage. Spending the time to protect your plumbing pipes this winter will result in hundreds of dollars in savings from needless plumbing repair costs. Do a careful interior and exterior inspection of your home and business to make sure you are covered this winter.

Preventing Frozen Pipes:
  • Detach outdoor garden hoses and shut-off values to pipes leading to any outdoor spigots.
  • Insulate outdoor water pipes that will be exposed to freezing temperatures and wind. Quality insulation wrap is available at your local hardware store and outlet center.
  • Unused hot water lines can freeze as well as cold. Inspect your hot water lines to ensure your pipes are protected.
  • Drain water pipes that will not be in use before severe cold weather hits.
  • Remember to wrap any water pipes in un-insulated garages and barns.
 Preventing Clogged Drains:
  • Additional buildup and clogging of cooking grease and oil can occur during colder periods. Avoid putting that cooking grease and oil into your garage disposer.
  • Never put foods like carrots, potato skins, banana peels, and other stringy and fibrous food into your disposer. Your garbage disposer is not able to fully grind these materials and they can easily clog your sink drain causing a massive backup.
  • Remember to run cold water down your drain for about 15 to 20 seconds before and after using your garbage disposer to flush out any waste.
  • The holidays can put additional stress on your plumbing. Extra guests mean additional showers, toilet flushing, and cooking. Prepare ahead and clean out P-traps and look for hair and other debris around drains that may pose a problem and lead to a plumbing disaster.
Eliminate Drafts:
  •  Prevent cold air from reaching your pipes. Look in crawl spaces, garages, attics, and cabinets for cold air that may contribute to freezing your pipes.
  • If you are aware of potential problems from un-insulated pipes, consider placing a small space heater a safe distance away to prevent freezing.

Pete’s Plumbing at Your Service
The steps you take today to protect your pipes against freezing will pay large dividends in the future. If after taking all these precautions you find yourself still facing a plumbing emergency, give us a call and our highly-trained staff of professional plumbers will be there to take care of the problem.

Pete’s Plumbing Leads the Way in Eco-Friendly Plumbing in the Atlanta Area

Pete’s Plumbing continues to blaze a trail in eco-friendly plumbing. The downturn of our economy has not put a damper on people’s desire for eco-friendly plumbing. In fact, in some ways, it has increased consumers’ awareness of green technology and inspired them to do more.

Ways to Go Green
Many consumers are interested in ways they can reduce their impact on the environment and save money at the same time. They are concerned about our planet and look to serve as a role model for their children. Minor alterations can have an enormous impact on your “green” factor.

And, the great news is, is does not cost a fortune to make these changes to our home and business.
  •  Water Conserving Toilets: Changing out your old toilet can save money and resources daily. According to the Environmental Protection Agency, replacing a pre-1992 toilet with a newer model that uses 1.28 gallons per flush will save you on average $90 per year and reduce water waste by 60%.
  • Shower Heads: Replace your full-flow shower head with one that restricts flow while still supplying plenty of water for a refreshing shower. You can save thousands of gallons of year by simply replacing your shower head and reduce water running down the drain.
  • High Efficiency Water Heaters: According to the Energy Star website, water heaters account for 15% of your home’s energy bill. Replacing an old water heater with a high efficiency model can realize savings anywhere from 10% to 50% of their energy consumption.
  • Outdoor Irrigation System: Review your outdoor irrigation system and look for problems with run-off and over-watering. Pay special attention to these areas as outdoor watering can account for up to 55% of your water usage. Adjust water times and schedule watering in the evening or early morning hours to avoid evaporation during hot and windy days. Avoid allowing water to puddle or runoff. Immediately replace any broken and missing parts to increase efficiency.
  • Aerators and Landscape Management: Consider replacing thirsty plants, scrubs, and lawns with drought-tolerant or indigenous materials to reduce your water consumption. Twice a year aerate your lawn to reduce soil compaction and runoff. Aerating your lawn allows for deeper watering and reduces your water consumption.
  • Insulate Pipes: Insulating your pipes is one of the cheapest ways you can go green even in a tight economy. Simply wrapping your pipes will ensure you receive your hot water quicker, thus eliminating your wait time and water down the drain.
  • Leaky Faucets or Toilets: The drip, drip you are hearing is money and resources down the drain. Fixing a leaky faucet or toilet will immediately save you money and stop our most valuable resource from going down the drain.
We are a Green Machine
Pete’s Plumbing is committed to being the “greenest” plumbing company in the Atlanta area. We have partnered with Moen, Kohler, and Mansfield to provide high-quality, good-looking fixtures at affordable prices that will reduce your water waste and save you money.

You can use these tips to make significant changes in your household’s water usage. Minor alterations can have an enormous impact. If you are still not sure where to start, give us a call today. We can get up set-up with the latest eco-friendly plumbing supplies that save you money and save our planet at the same time.

Staying on the Leading Edge of Plumbing Technology: Hybrid and Tankless Water Heaters

Pete’s Plumbing is committed to being a leader in green technology. The benefits to the environment and to our wallet demand we stay on the forefront. Small changes to the way we live can add up to big savings and can dramatically alter our impact to the environment.

Hybrid Gas and Electric Water Heaters: A Choice for a New Generation
Traditional tank heaters depend on heat rising from bottom. This can cause traditional heaters to be very energy inefficient. With hybrid tanks we can significantly increase our efficiency and begin saving money immediately.

The gas hybrid water heater depends on a tankless engine and buffer tank to marry the best of both technologies. It provides continuous hot water for those long showers and during high-demand periods when you are using high-performance appliances.

There are many models on the market and we offer a large selection of high-quality models to choose from. We proudly offer electric and gas water heaters from Rheem, Whirlpool, GE, U.S. Craftmaster, Bradford White, and A.O. Smith.

Check out These Models and Features
There are many models and features to consider when shopping for hybrid gas and electric water heaters:
  • The GE hybrid gas water heater features advanced heat pump technology designed to maximize your energy efficiency. The GeoSpring is an Energy Star® rated electric water heater and qualifies for a $300 federal tax rebate through 2011.
  • The GeoSpring was designed with convenience in mind. It uses standard connections and fittings, and has a similar configuration to fit easily in a standard 50 gallon space.
  • Rheem offers a hybrid electric water heater which is twice as efficient as today’s standard electric water heaters. These savings will quickly add up and don’t forget to check out this website to search for additional state and local rebates and incentives to increase your savings.
  • If you are looking for a water heater that delivers hot water with 90% thermal efficiency, check out an AO Smith gas Hybrid®.  This powerhouse offers simple installation, interactive controls, and stops the sudden interruptions of your hot water supply.
  •  U.S. Craftmaster delivers the next generation of hybrid water heaters. With multiple lifestyle modes, easy installation, the latest technology, and a continuous supply of hot water, U.S. Craftmaster offers a quality hybrid unit for the home.
Did Someone Say Tankless?
The convenience and space-saving abilities of tankless hot water heaters make them an ideal choice. By only heating water when you need it, you begin to save money the very first day. It delivers hot water quickly and efficiently. Rebates and incentives from state, local, and federal agencies make going tankless a wise choice.
We are committed to providing our customers with high-quality products that deliver performance along with savings. We are proud to offer models of tankless water heaters from these outstanding manufacturers:

  • Rinnai: Rinnai’s tankless hot water heater was awarded 2010 Builders’ Brand Leader by homebuilders in Builder Magazine by continually exceeding quality and expectations for their product. Rinnai offers an industry leading 12-year limited warranty to give added peace of mind.

Stopping Plumbing Trouble in its Tracks

Home plumbing disasters can cost you time and money. Avoid these common mistakes to save your pocketbook and your sanity.

Know What Lurks Behind Your Walls: Be aware of the location and direction of travel of your pipes before you start any home improvement project. Nailing or drilling into a wall without knowing the location of your plumbing can spell serious disaster. If you happen to hit a pipe with a nail or screw, you will have to tear out a section of drywall, replace the damaged piece of pipe, and patch the wall. This is an expensive lesson that you simply do not want to learn.

Copper to Galvanized Steel: Plumbing problems and leaks can occur when you connect copper to galvanized steel. They may be problem-free for years or you might spot a leak immediately. Either way, the best way to avoid leaks between copper to galvanized steel connections is to use a plumbing fitting called a dielectric union. A dielectric union separates the cooper from the galvanized steel, thus avoiding potential leaks.

Familiarize Yourself With Your Local Building Codes: Be informed. Pick up a copy of the International Plumbing Code or the Uniform Plumbing Code and keep it for reference. Another excellent resource is Code Check. They provide up-to-date building code information to ensure you are always in compliance with local building codes.

Never Over-Tighten: Over-tightening fittings is just as bad as under-tightening them. You will strip the threads and cause leaks by applying to much torque. Don’t do it!
Always Perform a Leak Test: One of the most important things you can do is perform a leak test on water pipes and gas lines. With water lines, let the water run and check connections for leaks. For gas lines, mix together a soapy detergent and spray on the connection. You can also purchase a bubble-creating leak detector. With both applications, look for bubbles as these will indicate you have a leak and need to seek professional help.

Septic Systems: A properly maintained septic system can last for years. Damage can occur when they are not properly pumped at regular intervals or if harsh chemicals are allowed to enter the system. Avoid these problems by having your system pumped professionally by a reputable plumbing professional. The same is true with chemicals and additives. Septic systems are designed to work without the aid of artificial additives. Naturally occurring bacteria works to breakdown solids. Introducing additives or chemicals can interfere with this process.

Proper Connections: When connecting gas lines, it is best to ensure you are using the proper connections. It is also a good idea to follow the manufacture’s recommendations to make certain you have installed the gas line properly. You can purchase universal connection kits that have multiple adapters.

Other Plumbing Dilemmas
If you have these or other plumbing problems and are not sure what to do or you do not feel confident in handling them, there is nothing wrong with calling your friendly neighborhood plumber to have a look and see if they can help you get your plumbing back in the flow of things.

What other plumbing problems have you had that you are not sure what to do? Leave your question or explanation below and we’ll see if we can help you!

Making the Most of a Precious Resource: Tips on Saving Water

Each year different parts of the country experience drought-like conditions. Every time this happens it drives home the point that water conservation should be a lifelong habit. If we alter our habits slightly we can achieve significant water savings.

Water is a precious resource that is limited. The steps we take now to reduce our water usage will ensure the water supply for future generations.

Little Tips that Make a World of Difference
As you move through your daily routine, keep these water conservation tips in mind.
  •  Never let the water run while you are brushing your teeth or shaving. This is simply water down the drain. Shut the water off and use it only to rinse.
  • Check for leaks. Inspect faucets, toilets, and sprinkler systems for leaks that silently rob water supplies.
  •  Invest in a high-efficiency front loading washer. You will significantly decrease your water usage with each load.
  • Be certain your dishwasher is fully loaded before running a cycle.
  • Invest in new low-flow faucets around the house.
  • It pays to install a low-flush toilet. You will recoup your cost quickly.

Outdoor Water-Saving Tips
  •  Shut off your sprinkler system and all the water running inside your house. Now inspect your meter. If your meter is moving, this could mean there is a leak somewhere. If you are unable to detect the leaks source, call a professional. They will be able to pinpoint the leak.
  • Look for overflow water when watering your landscaping. There is no need to water the driveway or sidewalk. Adjust sprinkler heads and watering times to avoid water this runoff.
  •  Take your car to your local car wash. Do the same with your boat or motorcycle.
  • For those of you that enjoy washing the car at home, invest in a shut-off value for your hose. Be sure to shut off the water when you are washing the car.
  • Visit your local hardware store and invest in mulch to use around plants. Using mulch decreases water evaporation and cuts water usage.
  • Cooler weather calls for an adjustment to your lawn watering schedule. Decrease your water times and frequencies.
  • Clean out your rain-gutters or install new ones to catch runoff water. Repurpose rainwater for house plants and other landscaping.
Becoming Water-Conscious
Being conscious of your water usage will increase your knowledge and show you different techniques for saving water. You are the last line of defense in water conservation. These simple techniques will save you money each month and help reduce the effects of drought conditions.

A plumber can also provide a water conservation inspection to help you with suggestions on daily habits as well as changes to your plumbing system and devices. Be sure to share your own tips for saving water below so that others can take advantage of your smart ideas!
